I have two types of prints in my shop Happy Tomato (and on my stall) digital and screen printed, and they have different qualities, and a totally different look. I like both for different reasons. I'll tell you why... Digital prints and cards from my illustrations. These are quite detailed, painterly images with lovely colours and textures, I scan them and have cards printed from them. The digital print captures the brushstrokes, textures and colours really well. For example my Hen House card, one of my most popular images, which I try to always have in stock. The original is gouache and watercolour and pencil crayon on Khadi paper flecked with fibres, gives a real farmyard feel! I have used this as a self promotion card, birthday card, and I also sell it as a small digital print. It's fun and quirky, and it has chickens! Screen Printed cards/prints These are designed as screen prints, not reproductions of artwork. These are a totally different look. Each different colour is a separate screen. I print each one by hand (sometimes in my dining room) I love the printing process. There is a lot of preparation before I get to the actual printing - designing, separating into different screens, preparing and developing the screen (I do this at Eastside Print in Brighton Then I select the paper stock, print each layer at a time (the most I have done is 3 colours for the Happy Dogs cards, which were my first screen printed cards) Something can (and often does) go wrong at each stage, a finger print (eeek) mis-registering a screen etc etc. But. I do love the finished result. I love that with screen printing I can reproduce my drawn and painted marks in a flat colour. I love mixing the colours by hand. The colours I have in my head don't always work out the way I think they will, but I find something better. I love the freedom to change my mind about the colours. Most of my print runs are very small, and I like to experiment. So you might find that I run out of one colour, and the next ones are different. For example my sausage dog cards began as dusky blues on yellow - this week they are pink on pink or orange. Who knows what they'll be next week. Sometimes the different options don't make it to the shop and get snapped up in person. If you have a look at my stall you will find different colourways, so if you like it, buy it, it won't be there forever. You can shop my current range of prints in my Happy Tomato Shop here.
